UN Migration Compact in the Domestic Debate

Migration is cross-border phenomenon that can be better managed when states cooperate. The UN’s Migration Compact, which will be formally adopted in December, follows that rationale. Nonetheless, its detailed prescriptions are the subject of public debates in Germany and other countries. In an open ed to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and in an interview with the regional “Schwäbischen Zeitung”, Daniel Thym explains why much of the criticism is ill-founded, even though misunderstandings can be supported by ambiguous wording along the lines of diplomatic compromises formulations.
